Renting a Boat in Fréjus: Port Fréjus, the Argens Estuary and Roman Heritage
Between the Esterel massif and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, a marina with a distinctive look and a town that still shows the traces of a major Roman harbour.
Between the Esterel massif and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, Fréjus combines a modern marina, a large seafront nature park and one of the Côte d'Azur's best-preserved Roman heritages — enough to build a boat rental trip around more than just the beach, on land and on the water alike.
Port Fréjus, a marina with a distinctive look
Built at the mouth of the Argens river, the Port Fréjus marina stands out for its colourful architecture, designed as a small harbour village in its own right. It holds a wide rental fleet, from license-free RIBs to sailboats, with direct access to open water and no approach channel to navigate first.
Fréjus, a major harbour of Roman-era Mediterranean
Founded as Forum Julii, Fréjus was once one of the great naval harbours of the Roman Mediterranean. The town still holds an amphitheatre (the arènes), the remains of an aqueduct and a Roman theatre, and the Lanterne d'Auguste, a tower that once marked the entrance to the Roman harbour — now standing well inland, as the shoreline has receded over the centuries. This whole heritage site is easy to visit ashore in half a day.
The Base Nature François Léotard
A former military site turned large seafront nature park, the Base Nature François Léotard rounds out a stay ashore between two boat trips: beach, outdoor activities and open views across the gulf. It's a good base for a family splitting a stay between time on the water and time ashore.
Towards the Esterel or towards the Gulf of Saint-Tropez
From Fréjus, two directions open up by boat: the Esterel's red coves towards Saint-Raphaël, covered in our guide to the Esterel and Saint-Raphaël, or the Gulf of Saint-Tropez towards Sainte-Maxime to the north. Both routes stay short, making it easy to combine the two very different moods in a single stay.
Budget and best season
Rates stay within the usual Côte d'Azur ranges for a RIB or motorboat rented by the day. The season runs from April to October, peaking in July-August, when the marina's rental fleet books up well ahead of the weekend. Boat-Comparator compares live offers available in Fréjus and Port Fréjus.
