La Trinité-sur-Mer boat rental: Houat, Hoëdic, Morbihan
Rent a boat in La Trinité-sur-Mer for Houat, Hoëdic and the gulf of Morbihan: Breton islands, anchorages, tidal currents and navigation advice.
La Trinité-sur-Mer is one of the best-known harbours in southern Brittany, a launch base for the islands of Houat and Hoëdic and the entrance to the gulf of Morbihan. Between the sheltered bay of Quiberon and strong currents, it is a magnificent playground for anyone who prepares their navigation seriously.
Houat and Hoëdic, the wild sisters
Houat and Hoëdic offer white-sand beaches and anchorages sheltered according to the wind direction. The classic is to anchor at Treac'h er Gourhed, Houat's big beach, over pale sand. Pick your shelter to suit the day's wind and watch the westerly swell; in an established blow, exposure changes everything.
These two islands make a fine full day: a swim at anchor in the morning, lunch aboard, then a walk ashore in the afternoon on the coastal paths. Hoëdic, smaller and quieter, appeals to those seeking calm. Reserve a mooring buoy where possible, and never leave the boat without checking the anchor is well dug in: the sand bottom holds, but a wind shift can quickly drag a poorly set anchor.
The gulf of Morbihan, a matter of current
Entering the gulf of Morbihan through the Port-Navalo passage means working with powerful tidal currents. You navigate with the flood or the ebb, never against a strong stream. Our guide to the Brittany coast and its islands sets the scene, while the tidal windows between the Île aux Moines and the Île d'Arz reward careful timing.
Inside the gulf, sailing becomes a game of patience and reading the current: you let yourself be carried from one anchorage to the next, between private islets and small harbours. Time your moves on the slack or the favourable stream, and beware the shallow areas that uncover at low water. It is a superb stretch of water, but one that rewards preparation over improvisation.
Which boat, which base
For the islands, a sailing yacht (300–700 €/day, or 1,500–4,000 €/week) or a motor cruiser (250–900 €/day) suit different rhythms. Boat rental in La Trinité-sur-Mer can be compared with a departure from Quiberon, closer to Houat. Book early: the season is short and busy.
Compare before you cast off
For the same boat, expect around 10 to 25 % variation between platforms. Boat-Comparator compares Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor live, unaffiliated: you see the real total (service fees 0 to 9 %) and the cancellation policy, which varies by owner and should be read listing by listing. As the Breton season is short and much in demand, book several weeks ahead to keep your pick of dates and of boats suited to the islands. Comparing platforms early also spares you the last-minute scramble when the popular boats have already gone. All brands cited remain the property of their respective owners.
