Renting a Boat in Le Croisic, Between La Baule and the Guérande Salt Marshes
A fishing port that has kept its character, a sheltered basin facing the Grand Traict, the wild coast and the salt marshes nearby: Le Croisic, a quieter alternative to La Baule.
At the tip of the Guérande peninsula, Le Croisic feels nothing like the seaside resort atmosphere of nearby La Baule: it has stayed a genuine fishing port, with its own fish auction, trawlers and granite lanes, while offering direct access to a sheltered stretch of water that's ideal for renting a boat.
A fishing port that has kept its character
Le Croisic's fish auction is still active, and the harbour continues to host a working fishing fleet alongside pleasure boats. That mix, rare on this stretch of coast, gives Le Croisic a different feel from the region's more touristy marinas.
The Grand Traict, a sheltered basin
Facing the port, the Grand Traict forms a large semi-enclosed basin, exposed at low tide and filled at high tide — calm water, well suited to a first outing without the swell of the open sea.
The wild coast, not for every weather
On the other side of the peninsula, the Côte Sauvage (wild coast) exposes a jagged, rocky shoreline open to the Atlantic — a stretch best kept for calm-sea days, very different from the shelter of the Grand Traict. Popular with surfers and shore fishermen at low tide, it's better admired from a safe distance than approached closely on a small boat.
Salt marshes and runs to La Baule or Pornic
A few minutes by road, the Guérande salt marshes round out a visit ashore, along with the Océarium du Croisic, the harbourside aquarium showcasing local marine wildlife. By sea, Le Croisic combines easily with La Baule, covered in our guide to the Guérande peninsula, or with Pornic further south towards the Loire estuary. The neighbouring village of Batz-sur-Mer, on the same peninsula, rounds out a walk ashore between two outings at sea.
Budget and best season
License-free RIBs and small motorboats rent by the half-day or full day on the Grand Traict, at similar rates to the rest of the Atlantic coast. The season runs from April to October, with the mildest conditions from June to September. Boat-Comparator compares live offers available in Le Croisic and across the Guérande peninsula.
