€321 median across 55 offers, and not a single yacht

Survey run on 3 September 2026 for a 3 October outing: 55 offers, a €321 median per day, cheapest at €80, most expensive at €1,042. That is a factor of 13 between the extremes only, a narrow spread for a base of this size. La Baule comes out as the 9th lowest median of the 119 bases we survey, and 20th on the entry price. Fleet composition explains the tight range: 25 of the 55 offers are motorboats (€360 median, €80 to €800), 12 are sailboats (€311 median, €149 to €922) and 8 are RIBs (€320 median, €116 to €380). Three categories whose medians sit within €49 of each other: here you pick by what you want to do that day, not by budget. The catamaran shows up twice only, at €1,042 — that is the survey maximum, to be read as an isolated example, never as a median. No yacht offer was recorded, on any date. For the licence-free category, our data collection has no reliable reading at all: we would rather show nothing than a doubtful price. Two departure points less than a kilometre away

The OpenStreetMap extract we use lists, within the La Baule radius, a Port d’Échouage 0.5 km away and the Port de Plaisance de Pornichet 0.9 km away (OpenStreetMap records, ODbL licence). The other entries in that radius — ponton A, ponton B, ponton 19 and their neighbours, around 7 km out — are fragments of the source data, individual berths rather than distinct harbours: we do not count them as departure points. From there, sailing follows the coast of the Guérande peninsula, covered in our guide to La Baule and the Guérande peninsula by boat. This shoreline is closely monitored: a study by Riwan Kerguillec, Morgane Audère, Agnès Baltzer, Françoise Debaine and Paul Fattal, published in 2019 in Ocean & Coastal Management, describes the creation of OR2C, the regional coastal hazards observatory set up in 2016 in the Pays de la Loire — a region that includes the bay of La Baule, though the study is not specifically about La Baule. It reports that the observatory monitors close to 400 km of coastline, that it was created against a background of high regional vulnerability to coastal erosion and storm surges, that it brings together 28 members (public institutions, research centres, decision-making and operational bodies) and that its monitoring strategy relies notably on airborne LiDAR (see the study). Facility details are listed on the marinas around La Baule hub.

October, tides and the licence rule

Our monthly medians read €314 in August (4 surveys), €361 in September (4 surveys) and €321 for October (a single survey so far). The rise from August to September is not a tariff increase: it is a fleet composition effect — the boats listed change from one survey to the next, and a handful of larger units appearing is enough to pull the median up, or disappearing to push it back down. The October figure rests on one survey only, so treat it as an order of magnitude, not a trend. On the rules: in France, motorboats rent license-free up to 6 hp (4.5 kW); above that, the French coastal license or an equivalent title is required. Sail needs no license at all. One local parameter remains: on this coast, departure times depend on the tide, a point covered in our guide to Atlantic tides and boat rental. For context, the neighbouring base of Le Croisic showed a €360 median across 65 offers on 4 September 2026, from €64 to €2,091: €39 above La Baule on the median, with a slightly lower entry price and a top end twice as expensive. Country-by-country gaps are detailed in our guide to boat rental prices by country.

La Baule's waters, in practice

The great Pouliguen bay, a sheltered arc between the Penchâteau and Chémoulin headlands. Wind-wise: a south-facing bay well defended from the prevailing westerlies, with soft summer thermals.

Departures, day-trip classics and season

Departures: the Pornichet marina, the bay’s main harbour. The local classics: the wild coast of the Guérande peninsula, Le Croisic and its lagoon, and the Loire estuary towards Saint-Nazaire. High season: from June to September, on one of Europe’s longest beaches.
