Renting a boat in Lisbon: the Tagus estuary
Belém tower, the 25 de Abril bridge, the dolphins of the Sado estuary: what to know before renting a boat in Lisbon.
Unlike Mediterranean destinations, Lisbon is sailed on a wide Atlantic estuary, the Tagus, with landmark monuments visible directly from the water.
From the water: Belém and the 25 de Abril bridge
A typical trip runs along the Tagus riverbank to the Belém tower and passes under the 25 de Abril bridge, a silhouette that deliberately echoes San Francisco's Golden Gate.
Cascais, the most popular base
At the mouth of the Tagus, Cascais is a seaside resort with an active marina, a favoured starting point for heading out onto the open Atlantic rather than the sheltered estuary.
The dolphins of the Sado
Further south, the Sado estuary near Setúbal is home to a resident population of bottlenose dolphins — a possible extension to a stay in Lisbon, best organised from the southern ports.
Compare offers
Since this is an Atlantic stretch of water rather than a Mediterranean one, check the weather and swell before heading out — see our guide to reading marine weather. The Lisbon listing page on Boat-Comparator lists the available offers.
