BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
Boat rental in Marbella and the Costa del Sol
Hire a boat in Marbella: Puerto Banus, Costa del Sol beaches and coves toward Estepona. Budgets, boat types and the best times to head out to sea.
Marbella embodies the smart side of the Costa del Sol: long beaches, lively marinas and the inevitable Puerto Banus, where the yachts line up in front of the terraces. Facing the Alboran Sea, with the outline of the Rock of Gibraltar and, on a clear day, Morocco's Rif mountains on the horizon, this is a coast of sun and swimming more than wild anchorages. Hiring a boat here is all about pleasure, ease and a festive mood. You come here first for the doing-nothing, the sound of the water and the wish to anchor off the beaches rather than for any technical sailing, and the flat, open coast makes that kind of undemanding day very easy to arrange.
Marbella and Puerto Banus
From the harbours of Marbella and Puerto Banus, you are straight out onto wide, open water. You anchor off the town's golden beaches, follow the Golden Mile and its hotels, and run west along a quieter coast. It is easy sailing, ideal for finding your feet, with no technical passage or trap shallow on the approach.
From San Pedro to Estepona
Heading west, the coast calms toward San Pedro de Alcantara and then Estepona. The seabed is often sandy, perfect for a quiet swim and for dropping the anchor over lunch aboard. Most operators are happy to let you roam this shore; it is more a coast of beaches and swimming than of sheltered coves, so pick your anchorage to suit the day's wind and the swell direction. Estepona itself makes a pleasant turnaround point, with its marina and flower-filled old town just back from the shore.
Which boat, what budget
For swimming and towed toys, a RIB (200 to 600 €/day) is the ideal companion. A day-cruiser (250 to 900 €/day) brings shade and comfort for the whole day; at the prestige end, a yacht from 2,500 €/day rents with a skipper at Puerto Banus. The same boat often varies by 10 to 25 % between platforms: Boat-Comparator compares SamBoat, Click&Boat, GlobeSailor and Boataround live, service fees of 0 to 9 % included.
Dolphins and sunset
The Alboran Sea is known for its dolphins, often met offshore on late-afternoon outings. Many operators offer sunset slots, when the light gilds the coast and the sea settles. It is the ideal moment for drinks at anchor before returning to Puerto Banus, where the quayside comes alive once night falls.
Timing
On the Alboran Sea, two winds set the rhythm: the levante, from the east, which builds fast and raises a tight chop, and the poniente, from the west, gentler. Mornings are usually calmest for swimming. From May to October the water is pleasant. Check the permitted area and the cancellation policy, which varies by owner, before you confirm.
