Renting a boat in Menorca (Mahón): coves and the tramontana

Menorca, quieter than Ibiza and Majorca: the best coves, the tramontana wind to know about, and where to rent a boat on the island.

Menorca has a calmer reputation than its neighbours Ibiza and Majorca: less nightlife, more unspoiled coves. Boats are mainly rented from Mahón, but also from Ciutadella, Fornells and Cala Galdana.

Coves not to miss

In the southwest, Cala Macarella and its neighbour Macarelleta (about 15 km from Ciutadella) rank among the island's most turquoise waters. In the north, Cala Pregonda stands out for its reddish sand and jagged rocks — but it is directly exposed to the north wind.

The tramontana, the local wind

The tramontana is a cold, dry wind from the north, sometimes blowing hard. When it picks up, the north-facing beaches and coves (Cavalleria, Pregonda) become uncomfortable to rough: the south coast, more sheltered, is the better call.

A local curiosity

On the south coast, the Cova d'en Xoroi, at Cala en Porter, is a natural cave overlooking the sea, reachable by boat or by road — an afternoon anchorage lets you admire the site before it turns into an evening venue.
