46 offers, and an inversion: the RIB costs more than the motorboat
Reading of 29 August 2026 for a 28 September outing: 46 offers, median €544 per day, first offer at €170, the dearest at €2,286. The motorboat alone accounts for half the catalogue — 23 offers at a €548 median, €210 to €2,183 — and that is where the anomaly sits: the 6 RIBs come out at €582 (€291 to €822), i.e. dearer than the motorboat, a rare inversion in our collection, where the RIB is almost everywhere the entry level. The sailboat stays at €429 across 3 offers (€284 to €575). The high-end categories date from 22 August and we date them rather than blend them into the main reading: 6 yachts at a €3,090 median (€1,290 to €5,700) and a single catamaran offer at €2,200. A note on method: the "license-free" line returned for Mahón — one offer at €507 — is identical, figure for figure, to that of six other bases in our collection, from Corsica to the Caribbean. Two bases thousands of kilometres apart cannot share a price to the cent: we discard it as a collection artefact rather than publish it. See choosing the right platform and prices by country.
Six marinas within 60 km: the emptiest radius of our Mediterranean bases
Marina de Menorca is 900 metres away, the summer anchorage of Sa Mesquida 3.2 km out and the Illa de l'Aire harbour 9.8 km — then nothing before Sa Nitja at 25.2 km, Cala'n Bosch at 37 km and the outer harbour of Ciutadella at 39.1 km. Six marinas in all within the 60 km radius (OpenStreetMap records), ranking 172nd of our 183 bases: on a 700 km² island, the sea is open and the stopovers can be counted on one hand. The port of Maó itself, one of the longest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, is also a working commercial port — and that shows up in the data. A study by Carme Alomar and colleagues, published in 2023 in Environmental Science and Pollution Research, sampled surface waters across the Menorca Biosphere Reserve and found microplastics in 100% of its 90 samples, averaging 0.18 ± 0.01 items per square metre, with a distinctive signature in the commercial Port de Maó, where almost half of the identified items were packaging foams tied to goods traffic. One more reason to let nothing go over the side in so enclosed a harbour. See the marinas around Mahón and our Mallorcan base of Alcúdia.
September: −29%, the steepest drop of our ten Balearic bases
The median moves from €952 for August outings to €673 for September ones, i.e. −29%, across four readings each side. That is by far the steepest drop of our ten Balearic bases: Palma falls 11%, San Antonio and Formentera 10%, Ibiza 7%, while Santa Ponsa actually rises. Menorca, whose season is shorter and later than its neighbour's, genuinely discounts its shoulder season — one of the few bases where waiting for September changes the budget by a third. On the rules: Spain requires no qualification up to 15 hp (11 kW) on a hull of 5 m maximum (6 m under sail), in daylight and within 2 nautical miles of shelter, but our reading returns no reliable "license-free" offer in Mahón. Mahón (Menorca)'s waters, in practice
The natural harbour of Mahón, one of the longest natural harbours in the world, cut into Menorca’s east coast. Wind-wise: the tramuntana that sweeps Menorca for days at a time — the harbour then being one of the Balearics’ best shelters.
Departures, day-trip classics and season
Departures: the quays and marinas of Mahón harbour, along several sheltered kilometres. The local classics: the Lazareto and Illa del Rei islets inside the harbour, the Illa de l’Aire to the south and the Binibèquer calas. High season: from May to October, biosphere-reserve Menorca keeping a gentler pace.
