Boat Rental in Mykonos: Delos, Rhenia and Beaches

Boat rental in Mykonos: the sandy coves of Rhenia, ancient Delos from the water, south beaches sheltered from the meltemi, boat choice, season, budget.

Mykonos from the sea is a different island: fewer crowds, more light, and two exceptional neighbours a short crossing away — Delos, the sanctuary island of antiquity, and Rhenia, almost deserted, whose white-sand coves rival the Caribbean. Here, a boat is simply the shortest route to peace and quiet.

The star spots: Rhenia, Delos and the south coast

The classic day heads west. Rhenia first: twin bays of pale sand, translucent water and quiet anchorages even in summer. Then Delos, which you cruise along to grasp the scale of the ancient site from the water — landing and anchoring there are strictly regulated, so check with your rental company before counting on stepping ashore. South of Mykonos, the famous beaches are best rediscovered from the sea: family-friendly Ornos and Platis Gialos, livelier Paraga, Super Paradise and Elia — all relatively sheltered when the meltemi blows from the north.

A word of planning: the anchorages at Rhenia are over sand with easy holding, but there are no services ashore whatsoever — bring water, a parasol and provisions for the day. Many crews combine a morning at Rhenia, lunch at anchor and a return along the south coast beaches to finish quietly; it is the formula that makes the best of both the wind and the light. If the crossing looks rough, simply reverse the plan and stay in the lee of the south coast.

Which boat to choose

In summer the dominant formula is the skippered RIB: the water between Mykonos and Rhenia builds quickly, and a local skipper shapes the route around the day's wind. Experienced crews can rent a motorboat or RIB bareboat, within the zone defined by the rental company. For a group day out, the day-charter catamaran is in high demand — see our guide to catamaran day charter. Browse RIB rentals in Mykonos to compare what is available.

When to go

May to October. The meltemi rules the game in July and August: it blows from the north for days at a time, which is precisely what makes the south coast and Rhenia so valuable — there is almost always a lee to be found. June and September remain the dream months: tamer wind, warm water, breathable anchorages. Whatever the date, cross to Rhenia in the morning, before the breeze gets up.

Budget: the ranges we see

Expect 200–600 € per day for a RIB, 250–900 € per day for a motorboat, 800–1,500 € per day for a catamaran and 150–350 € per day for a skipper.
