Boat Rental in Preveza, on the Ambracian Gulf
A sheltered inland sea between mainland Greece and Epirus: discover Preveza and the Ambracian Gulf by rental boat.
At the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf, a large Greek inland sea linked to the Ionian Sea by a narrow channel, Preveza offers a very different base from the nearby Ionian Islands.
An enclosed, sheltered stretch of water
The Ambracian Gulf forms a nearly closed basin, largely protected from swell and most Ionian winds — a reassuring setting for sailing without prior experience, with anchorages that stay calm even when the wind picks up offshore.
A strait crossed by tunnel
The channel linking the gulf to the Ionian Sea, between Preveza and Aktio, has also been crossed since 2002 by an undersea road tunnel — one of the few of its kind in the world, and a useful landmark for spotting the gulf's entrance from offshore.
A gateway to the Ionian Islands
Preveza also sits a short distance from Lefkada and the Ionian Islands, making it easy to pair sheltered sailing in the gulf with a more classic outing on open sea.
Ancient history nearby
On the gulf's southern shore lie the ruins of Nicopolis, a city founded by Emperor Augustus to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Actium, fought in this very gulf in 31 BC.
