The enclosed gulf that opens behind the town holds a remarkable population: a study by Joan Gonzalvo and colleagues, published in 2016 in Advances in Marine Biology, tracked the Gulf of Ambracia's common bottlenose dolphins by photo-identification over ten years (2006-2015) and puts the population at between 130 and 170 animals, one of the highest densities observed in the Mediterranean for this species, with a declining trend of 1.6% per year and strong year-round site fidelity (see the study).
