Why the Athens median tells you nothing about a day’s price

Reading of 24 August 2026 for a 23 September outing: 91 offers, median €2,300 per day, first offer at €150, the dearest at €25,500. That €2,300 figure is the most misleading on the site, and it deserves an explanation: 34 of the 91 offers are yachts. The category breakdown puts everything back in order: RIB €380 (1 offer), sailboat €594 median (25 offers, from €234), catamaran €952 (9 offers, from €551), motorboat €2,142 (10 offers, from €600), yacht €4,000 (34 offers, from €1,440). The demonstration is sharper still six kilometres away: the Alimos base, read on 20 August, comes out at a €707 median across 63 offers, with a sailboat at €327. Same gulf, same week, more than a threefold gap between the two medians — because the fleets sampled are not the same. From Zea to Vouliagmeni: the Athens riviera lines up its marinas

Athens’ south coast is a string of bases (OpenStreetMap records): the Zea marina in Piraeus, the Kallithea sailing marina 3 km on, the Alimos marina 6 km out — Greece’s biggest charter base —, Agios Kosmas 10 km, the four Glyfada marinas 11-12 km (146, 94, 253 and 259 berths respectively), the Voula marina 15 km and Vouliagmeni 19 km. Check carefully which one appears on your confirmation: end to end, that is half an hour in Athens traffic. The water itself is the Saronic gulf: Aegina and the Aphaia temple, the Poros channel, car-free Hydra, and Cape Sounion at sunset — a meltemi far tamer than in the Cyclades, which makes it the ideal basin for a first Greek charter. On water quality, a 2022 study by Eleni Prifti et al. in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, based on dated sediment cores, documents a significant decrease in heavy-metal enrichment (V, Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Ag) since 2000 in the part of the inner gulf influenced by the Athens wastewater treatment plant (see the study) — the Saronic is in better shape than it was twenty-five years ago. September in Athens: the ideal window for sailing

The overall median barely moves between August and September outings (€2,095 → €2,181, +4%), again because the sample is dominated by yachts. September’s real Aegean argument is meteorological: a 2013 study by Evangelos Tyrlis and Jos Lelieveld in the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences establishes that Etesian outbreaks — the meltemi — peak from mid-July to mid-August, and that their incidence declines over the June-September period, the trend being "strikingly strong for September" (see the study). Since the Saronic is already the most sheltered basin in Greece, late season is the most comfortable window of the year for a first sailboat charter.
