That is 26 marinas within 60 km. The appeal is geographic: from the Sounion headland, Kea lies a handful of miles away and the Cyclades follow on without sailing back down the Saronic Gulf — hence the credible alternative to Alimos and Athens. Lavrio is also a former mining and smelting district, and the state of its coastal sediments has been measured: a study by Effrosyni Zafeiraki and colleagues, published in 2023 in Marine Pollution Bulletin, puts polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Saronikos Gulf at 21.4 to 1,820 ng/g of dry sediment, against 125 to 2,720 ng/g in Piraeus harbour, with toxicity quotients indicating low or no adverse effects on biota for the Saronikos (see the study).
