La Ciotat or Cassis: Which Base for a Boat Rental to the Calanques?
Île Verte and the Figuerolles cove on one side, the heart of the Calanques national park on the other: La Ciotat and Cassis, two neighbouring bases for exploring the Calanques by rental boat.
Barely ten kilometres of coastline apart, La Ciotat and Cassis are the two most practical bases for reaching the Calanques national park by rental boat — each through its own gateway.
La Ciotat: Île Verte and Figuerolles
From the old harbour, Île Verte is a few minutes away, with shaded coves and its old fort, while the Figuerolles cove — also reachable on foot — reveals a different angle from the water. La Ciotat marks the eastern edge of the Calanques park and lets you head toward Cassis along Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliff in France.
Cassis: the heart of the national park
From Cassis harbour, the calanques of Port-Miou, Port-Pin and En-Vau follow one another within half an hour's cruising — the park's most iconic trio, turquoise water between limestone walls. Our guide to the Calanques from Marseille and the Frioul islands compares this approach with the closer one from Cassis.
Regulated boating in summer
The national park enforces strict anchoring rules in high season to protect the seabed — worth checking with the operator before departure, whichever base you choose.
Wind, a factor to watch
This stretch of coast, exposed to the mistral, also sees a regular summer sea breeze that builds around midday — the classic daily cycle described in the landmark review by Miller, Keim, Talbot and Mao, published in 2003 in Reviews of Geophysics (see the study on Google Scholar). A morning outing is often the most comfortable option from either base.
Verdict
Choose La Ciotat for Île Verte, Figuerolles and a less saturated base in peak summer. Choose Cassis for the most direct access to the Port-Miou, Port-Pin, En-Vau trio. Boat-Comparator queries Boataround, SamBoat and Click&Boat live to compare real prices across both bases.
