A tiny harbour, a national park all around

Cassis has one harbour and it is small: Port de Cassis, 300 m from the centre (OpenStreetMap records). Beyond it, the coast is a national park. The next shelters are the calanques themselves — Port de Morgiou at 7.8 km and Port de Sormiou at 9.5 km — then, on the Marseille side, Bassin des Capucins (7.1 km), the old harbour of La Ciotat (7.2 km) and Bassin Bérouard (7.3 km); eastward, Nouveau port des Lecques (12.1 km) and Port de la Madrague (13.6 km). That scarcity of berths is why the Cassis fleet is small and books out fast in high season. The core of the Calanques national park is regulated: controlled anchoring, reinforced protection zones, speed limits. The environment is under documented pressure: a study by Sandrine Ruitton and colleagues, published in 2021 in Water, shows that the invasive brown alga Rugulopteryx okamurae, first recorded in the park in 2018, had already colonised 9.5 km of coastline by 2020, integral protection zones included, blanketing the rocky bottoms (see the study). September in Cassis: −10% and calanques that empty out
