Porquerolles no-licence: what a 6 hp boat really does
Porquerolles and the Giens peninsula by no-licence boat: what a 6 hp engine really allows, sheltered anchorages and caution in the Petite Passe.
Porquerolles is a dream, but let us be honest: from Hyeres or the Giens peninsula, the no-licence crossing calls for caution and kind conditions. A 6 hp engine is not made to fight swell or a rising wind. This guide sets out the reality without gloss, and Boat-Comparator helps you compare local offers while being affiliated with no platform.
The reality of a 6 hp engine
French no-licence boating is capped at 6 hp (4.5 kW), by day, within a zone set by the operator. At 5 knots your useful radius is 2 to 5 nautical miles from your base, often the Tour Fondue or Hyeres harbour. Porquerolles is within reach in very calm seas, but the Petite Passe crossing between Giens and the island is exposed to the easterly and the mistral, and it builds fast. Many operators cap the zone to the bay and the Giens shoreline.
Make Giens your priority
Rather than forcing the crossing, enjoy Giens: the double Almanarre beach on the west, the Madrague and the wild-coast coves on the east offer clear water and anchorages sheltered depending on the wind. In a mistral, tuck in to the east; in an easterly, move to the west. The clean sandy bottom holds the anchor well. It is a superb outing that stays comfortably within a small engine's limits, without ever straining. The salt marshes and pink flamingos in the background add to the charm, and the shallow, clear water is ideal for a first swim stop with children.
Aim for Porquerolles, but in the right conditions
If the sea is glassy and the wind nil, Notre-Dame beach and Plage d'Argent on the north side of Porquerolles offer easy, sheltered sandy anchorages. Check the day's forecast and above all the afternoon outlook: the wind often gets up after midday, and you do not want to return against the chop with the throttle wide open. Turn back without hesitation if the Petite Passe is whitecapping. Find suitable boats under no-licence rental in Hyeres or directly at Porquerolles.
Budget and common sense
Expect 100 to 250 EUR a day for no-licence, with a 10 to 25 percent spread for the same boat between platforms. Bring water, a picnic and good sunglasses, and tell the operator how many people are coming so they can match you to the right hull. Compare through Boat-Comparator before booking, and read our no-licence rental guide to frame your first trip. The cancellation policy varies by operator: check each offer, ask the operator for the briefing on the permitted zone, and do not hesitate to call it off if the wind freshens. A fine day exploring the Giens coves in calm water beats an endured, wet crossing that spoils the outing for everyone on board.
