Sunscreen and Coral Reefs: What's Restricted in Certain Destinations
Seychelles, the Caribbean, French Polynesia: some destinations restrict chemical sunscreens to protect their corals. What to know before packing.
A tube of sunscreen picked up at the supermarket before departure might seem like a minor detail — until you learn that some tropical destinations strictly regulate its use, to protect exactly what makes the boat trip worthwhile: healthy coral seabeds.
What the science established
The starting point for these restrictions is a study now well known among marine ecology researchers: it showed that oxybenzone (benzophenone-3), a chemical UV filter widely used in conventional sunscreens, causes deformities in coral larvae even at low concentrations, damages their DNA and disrupts their hormonal system, to the point of trapping the coral in its own skeleton and killing it (Downs et al., Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2016, see the study on Google Scholar).
What applies in our destinations
In the Seychelles, chemical sunscreens are restricted in and around coral reef zones, with a strong preference for so-called "mineral" or "reef-safe" formulas. In French Polynesia, no strict ban is in force as of today, but authorities explicitly recommend natural, mineral-filter sunscreens over chemical ones, particularly around lagoons and the most popular snorkelling spots.
How to spot a reef-safe sunscreen
- Favour mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) over chemical ones.
- Avoid oxybenzone and octinoxate on the ingredient list.
- Apply sunscreen at least twenty minutes before swimming, to limit what washes off immediately into the water.
A habit that goes beyond regulation alone
Even where no law requires it yet, the principle holds everywhere you sail over a fragile coral seabed — our guide to anchoring on coral reefs covers the other good habits, from anchor placement to fins, for preserving what you came to admire.
