Boat Rental Mahé: Victoria, Beau Vallon and the Sainte Anne Marine Park

Renting a boat on Mahé, the largest Seychelles island: Sainte Anne marine park, Beau Vallon, the link to Praslin, trade wind seasons and budget.

Mahé holds most of what makes the Seychelles run: the capital Victoria, the international airport, and most of the archipelago's boat departures. It's also a complete destination for a day on the water in its own right — a mooring in the shade of a granite headland is never far from a white sand beach.

The Sainte Anne marine park, just off Victoria

A short hop from the capital, the Sainte Anne marine national park protects six islets — Sainte Anne, Moyenne, Round Island, Cerf, Long and Cachée — ringed by shallow coral flats that are ideal for family snorkelling. Sailing here is regulated: anchoring is limited to designated zones, and a park entry fee applies, usually itemised in the operator's listing.

Beau Vallon and the north-west coast

On the side of the island facing away from Victoria, Beau Vallon bay offers one of the island's longest sheltered anchorages, popular for a sunset run or a day split between the beach and snorkelling. Further north, the coves of Anse Major, reachable only by sea or along a coastal trail, reward crews willing to go a little further.

Reaching Praslin and the neighbouring islands

A catamaran booked for the week allows for island-hopping between Mahé and Praslin, where Anse Lazio and Curieuse Island round out the itinerary — our dedicated Praslin guide covers that route. A motorboat with a local skipper remains the most common option for a single day out from Mahé.

Two monsoon regimes, two different moods

The Seychelles can be sailed year-round, but two monsoons split the calendar: the south-east monsoon, from May to October, brings drier air but a choppier sea on exposed coasts; the north-west monsoon, from November to April, is warmer, more humid and often calmer. A landmark study of Seychelles climate documented marked drought episodes, such as the one in 1999, and the mass coral bleaching event of 1998 linked to warming water (Payet & Agricole, AMBIO: A Journal of the Human Environment, 2006, see the study on Google Scholar) — a useful reminder to never anchor on, or step on, coral, which is particularly fragile around Sainte Anne.

Budget and planning

Expect €250–900 a day for a motorboat with skipper, €200–600 a day for a RIB within the permitted zone, and €3,000–8,000 a week for a liveaboard catamaran. Trips are often timed around the tide for access to certain reef flats, so booking a few days ahead in high season pays off.
