Praslin ranks 91st for the lowest median among the 119 bases in our readings — mid-table — but 113th out of 119 on the first offer: only six logged bases start higher. The striking feature here is not the median, it is the floor. The fleet is dominated by the catamaran: 18 of the 53 offers, median €917, from €427 to €3,440. No harbour in our extract, and a restored reef off Cousin

Better said plainly: the OpenStreetMap extract we use records no harbour within 60 km of Praslin. That is a gap in the source data, not a fact on the water: the island obviously has boarding points and anchorages, but none of them is described in our OpenStreetMap records. So we would rather name no harbour and give no distance than write what we have not measured; the exact departure point is for the operator to confirm before you book. What is documented, on the other hand, is the seabed you drop the hook on. A study by Phanor Montoya-Maya and colleagues, published in 2016 in Nature Conservation, deals with coral reef restoration in Seychelles — not on Praslin itself, but in the no-take marine reserve of Cousin Island Special Reserve, an islet of the inner Seychelles. Between November 2011 and June 2014, 24,431 nursery-grown coral colonies from 10 species were transplanted onto 5,225 m² (0.52 ha) of degraded reef. Since the goal of ecological restoration is a self-sustaining, resilient system, the transplanted reef must be able to recruit new juvenile colonies: the authors quantified the density of recruits (under 1 cm) and juveniles (1 to 5 cm) before and after transplantation, to assess the project’s effect on coral recruitment and reef recovery (see the study). August, September and the licence: what our readings do not say

For August outings, the median of our Praslin readings comes out at €778 across 3 readings; for September ones, at €675 across 4 readings. The gap should not be read as a lower price list: on three or four readings only, it mainly reflects the make-up of the fleet on display at collection time, where an €8,000 yacht present then absent moves the median on its own.
