Sailing Around 15 August: Public Holiday, Packed Harbours, How to Cope

15 August marks the peak of the Mediterranean high season: harbours full, anchorages packed by 11am. How to book and plan around it anyway.

15 August, the Feast of the Assumption, is a public holiday across France, Italy, Spain and Greece — a day off for a large share of the continent, which, unsurprisingly, heads to the water at the same time. It's statistically one of the busiest single days of the entire season on Mediterranean coasts.

A peak concentrated into a few weeks

A study of tourism seasonality across Mediterranean islands confirms what every operator sees firsthand: activity concentrates heavily in July and August, with sizeable swings in visitor numbers between the height of summer and the rest of the year depending on the archipelago studied (Ruggieri & Platania, Sustainability, 2024, see the study on Google Scholar). 15 August sits right at the centre of that peak.

What actually changes on the day

Popular anchorages fill up by 10–11am, well earlier than the usual high-season pace. Free berths become scarce, even for a single overnight stop. Operators book out weeks ahead for the most requested slots, especially the weekend bracketing the date.
