Which professional for which situation

Skipper: no licence, unfamiliar waters, or you just want to relax. A paid skipper must hold a professional maritime qualification: ask to see it.
License-free rental: in France, a motorboat of 6 hp or less needs no licence. The company should brief you on the permitted area and the 300-metre coastal strip before you leave.
First rental: ask for a hand-over on the dock (manoeuvres, anchoring, safety) and a contract stating the navigation area and return time.
Group or event: the boat’s authorised capacity (on its builder’s plate) is a legal limit, not a suggestion. Beyond it you need several boats or a passenger vessel.
Boating licence: training takes place in a school approved by the authorities of the country concerned.
