Bodrum or Marmaris: which base to rent from in Turkey?
Two great gateways to the Turkish coast face off: lively Bodrum and its gulets, sheltered Marmaris and its green bays. Weather, mood, itineraries — how to choose.
They are the two biggest gateways to Turkish sailing, about a hundred kilometres apart, yet two worlds. Bodrum opens onto the Aegean and its buzz; Marmaris commands the Turkish Mediterranean and its deep bays. Here's how to decide by your plan.
Two temperaments, two seas
Bodrum is the historic capital of the Turkish schooner, the famous gulet, and a town that never sleeps: lively marina, restaurants, nightlife. Its gulf, wide open to the Aegean, looks towards the nearby Greek Dodecanese islands, Kos first among them. Marmaris nestles at the head of a vast bay ringed by green hills; the anchorage is more protected, the mood more "nature", and the Lycian riviera of Göcek and Fethiye opens just to the east.
The wind question
The factor that really separates the two is the summer wind. The Aegean, around Bodrum, is swept by the meltem (the Greek meltemi), a northerly that can blow hard for several days at a stretch in high summer. A study by Evangelos Tyrlis and Jos Lelieveld published in 2013 in the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences (see the study on Google Scholar) shows these Etesian winds are most frequent from mid-July to mid-August. In practice: Bodrum and the north of its gulf offer fine sailing but can get boisterous; Marmaris and the bays to the south-east, better sheltered, suit those seeking calm anchorages and a more manageable sea — a key criterion for a first charter.
Typical itineraries
From Bodrum, you roam the gulf (Gümüşlük, Türkbükü) and, with paperwork in order, eye the southern Cyclades and the Dodecanese. From Marmaris, the classic route runs to the Gulf of Hisarönü, the Datça peninsula, then the Lycian coast — one of the Mediterranean's finest strings of bays, ideal for a week aboard.
Budget and level
Both bases are among the best value in world chartering, especially on a crewed gulet. To compare ranges by boat type, see our guide to what a rental really costs. On level: Marmaris is more forgiving to the beginner, Bodrum rewards those who like brisk sailing and a lively scene.
Verdict
Choose Bodrum for the atmosphere, punchy sailing and the closeness of the Greek islands; Marmaris for sheltered bays, nature and a serene first charter.
