Groix or Belle-Île: Which Island to Choose by Boat from Lorient or Quiberon?

The crescent-shaped Grands Sables beach or the wild cliffs at the Aiguilles de Port-Coton: Groix and Belle-Île, Morbihan's two big islands, compared for a rental boat outing.

Off the Morbihan coast, two islands dominate every itinerary: Groix, off Lorient, and Belle-Île-en-Mer, Brittany's largest island, off Quiberon. Both are reachable by rental boat, but not with the same effort or the same scenery.

Groix: the closest, the most affordable

From Lorient, Groix is under an hour's cruising away depending on the engine — the shorter of the two crossings. The island owes its reputation to the Grands Sables beach, one of Europe's rare convex beaches, and to an unspoiled rocky coast on its southern side. Our guide to Lorient, the Blavet and Groix details the anchorages reachable from the roadstead.

Belle-Île: the more spectacular, the further one

From Quiberon, the crossing to Belle-Île is longer and exposes the boat more to Atlantic swell, especially on the west side. The payoff matches the effort: the cliffs and the famous Aiguilles de Port-Coton, immortalised by Monet, along with the Côte Sauvage, deliver Morbihan's most spectacular coastal scenery. Our guide to Belle-Île from Quiberon details the route and the precautions worth taking on the exposed west side.

Two islands, two skill levels

Groix suits a more relaxed programme, well matched to a less experienced crew or a family outing. Belle-Île calls for a more seaworthy boat and close attention to the forecast on its exposed face, especially past the Poulains headland.

When to go to dodge the crowds

Both islands see the bulk of their visitors concentrated in high summer — a seasonality pattern well documented across Mediterranean islands and driven by a mechanism that transfers directly to Atlantic islands: demand concentrating heavily on July and August (Ruggieri, G. & Platania, M., Islands' Tourism Seasonality, Sustainability, 2024, see the study on Google Scholar). June and September stay noticeably quieter on both islands.

Verdict

Choose Groix for a shorter, cheaper crossing suited to a beginner crew. Choose Belle-Île for the spectacle of the Aiguilles de Port-Coton, provided you accept a longer, more exposed crossing. Boat-Comparator queries Boataround, SamBoat and Click&Boat live to compare real prices from both bases.
