Where to Rent a Boat in the Dalmatian Islands: Which Island (or Which Base) to Choose?

Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Vis, Šolta, Dugi Otok, Mljet: a charterer's manual to the Dalmatian archipelago — depart from the mainland or rent on an island, and which one to aim for.

More than a thousand islands and islets make Dalmatia the largest archipelago in the Mediterranean after Greece — and Croatia's ultimate cruising ground. But for a charterer the map is deceptive: the big departure bases are almost all on the mainland, and "renting in the islands" covers two very different realities. This guide puts the archipelago in order.

Depart from the mainland or rent on an island?

For a week's cruise (sailboat, catamaran), you embark from the mainland bases — Split, Trogir, Zadar, Šibenik, Biograd, Dubrovnik — and the islands are the stages. For a day outing, you rent locally instead: Hvar and Korčula have their own fleets of motorboats and RIBs, and most tourist islands offer small boats at the harbour. The charter sector is one of the engines of Croatian tourism: research on the country's charter companies shows an industry structured around these Dalmatian bases and growing steadily (Gračan, Bardak & Rudančić-Lugarić, The research results of charter companies in Croatia, Tourism and Hospitality Management, 2011, see the study on Google Scholar).

Hvar: the star, with the Pakleni as a front garden

The Adriatic's most sought-after island, Hvar combines a showpiece town, an intense anchorage scene and, right offshore, the string of the Pakleni islands — coves and moorings less than a mile away. It is the best island for renting locally by the day, and the flagship stop of cruises out of Split. Everything is in our guide to boat rental in Hvar and the Pakleni.

Brač and Šolta: Split's neighbours

Facing Split, Brač (with the pebble spit of Zlatni Rat at Bol) and quiet Šolta form the day-trip triangle from the great Dalmatian base — our guide to Split, Brač, Hvar and Šolta by the day is devoted to it. Šolta, the least known, has the calmest coves within an hour of Split.

Korčula and Mljet: the greener, quieter south

Korčula lines up a superb walled old town, an archipelago of islets to the east and a genuine local rental offer — see our guide to boat rental in Korčula. Its neighbour Mljet, the national-park island with salt lakes, is visited by boat from Korčula or Dubrovnik; our guide to Mljet national park details the rules. Further south still, the Elaphiti belong to the Dubrovnik basin — see Dubrovnik and the Elaphiti.

Vis: furthest out, best preserved

Long a closed military zone, Vis stayed clear of tourist development — that is its charm. Count on a proper passage from Split or Hvar, rewarded by Komiža, the southern coves and the Blue Cave of Biševo. Our guide to Vis and Biševo explains how the visit works.

Dugi Otok and the Kornati: the northern archipelago

Off Zadar, Dugi Otok borders the Telašćica nature park and opens onto the mineral labyrinth of the Kornati, a moonscape national park with an entry fee. It is northern Dalmatia's great playground — our guides to Zadar and Dugi Otok and the Kornati from Zadar and Šibenik cover the sector.

Which island for which programme?

Festive mood and lively anchorages: Hvar. Family and calm day-trip coves: Šolta or Brač from Split, Korčula in the south. Raw nature and open-sea feeling: Vis or the Kornati. Romantic island stopover: Mljet. And if you are torn between two stars, our comparison Hvar or Korčula settles it point by point. In August, keep the local rule in mind: buoys and organised moorings fill early — our guide "in Croatia in August, be moored by 4pm" will spare you many laps of the bay.

Our advice

For a week, pick your basin first — Zadar/Kornati in the north, Split/Hvar in the centre, Dubrovnik/Korčula/Mljet in the south — then the matching mainland base: our overview where to rent a boat in Croatia compares them all. For a day out from an island, Hvar and Korčula have the deepest fleets.
