Hvar or Korčula: which island to pick for a boat rental in Croatia?
Nightlife and lavender fields on Hvar, vineyards and a quiet old town on Korčula: how to choose between Croatia's two most requested Dalmatian islands.
Less than a day's sail apart on the same Dalmatian route, Hvar and Korčula account for a large share of Croatian rental demand — for two almost opposite moods, even though both islands share the same dry climate and turquoise water.
Hvar, the island that never sleeps in summer
Famous for its lavender fields and its namesake town known for nightlife, Hvar draws a crowd looking as much for a party as for sailing. The Pakleni islands, just offshore, offer sheltered coves by day, well covered in our dedicated guide to Hvar and the Pakleni, before the town's evening buzz picks back up.
Korčula, wine and calm
Its fortified old town, built on a fishbone-shaped peninsula, is traditionally presented as the birthplace of Marco Polo — a claim historians still debate, but one Korčula wears with pride. The island is also home to two local grape varieties, Grk and Pošip, served in the waterfront konobas, and keeps a noticeably calmer mood than its neighbour, leaning more towards food and long evenings at the quay than towards partying.
A question of crowding, too
The choice between the two isn't only about the mood you're after. A 2022 study published in Ocean & Coastal Management, which built a tourism carrying capacity index for Mediterranean islands, notes that tourist pressure concentrated on the most publicised islands wears down their anchorages faster than on islands with more evenly spread visitor numbers (see the study on Google Scholar) — a real gap between Hvar and Korčula at the height of summer.
Why not both?
Nothing stops you combining the two in a single week: the distance between the islands is just a few hours' sailing, a classic leg on itineraries out of Split.
