From the sand bar, the Cabo de Palos basin is 1.1 miles away, Puerto Bello 1.2, Mar de Cristal 1.9, the Dos Mares sailing club 2, Islas Menores 2.3, Los Nietos 3.1, Los Alcázares 8.6 and Lo Pagán 11.6 miles. Wherever you are in the lagoon, shelter is under 2 miles off.

The practical consequence: this is beginners’ water with almost no equivalent. Flat, warm, shallow, volcanic islets to visit, and not a single headland to round. The flip side is that going out to the Mediterranean through the Tomás Maestre channel (7 miles north) changes the game entirely — swell, traffic and real wind — and licence-free contracts almost always exclude it. Stay inside: that is where the interest lies, and the lagoon is enough to fill several days.

In La Manga, license-free costs more than the harbour median

This is the sharpest twist in our Spanish readings.
