Fréjus or Saint-Raphaël: Which Base for a Boat Rental Facing the Estérel?

Two neighbouring ports at the head of the same gulf, one shared playground — the Corniche d'Or, the Dramont, Agay. Atmosphere, waters and boat types: what really separates the two bases.

Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël share the head of the same gulf, less than two miles apart. From the water, the distinction fades: either way, you point the bow at the red rocks of the Estérel, Cap du Dramont and the coves of Agay and Anthéor. So the choice of base comes down to other things — the feel of the port, the type of boats on offer, and a few minutes of motoring saved towards the best anchorages.

Fréjus: the built-in marina, easy with a family

Port-Fréjus is a marina dug in the 1980s at the edge of town, with pedestrian quays, shops and parking right next to the pontoons. For a day rental — open motorboat, RIB or licence-free boat — it is a convenient base: load the cool box from the car, step aboard, and the harbour exit opens straight onto the gulf. To the west, the coast runs towards Saint-Aygulf and Les Issambres, then on to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez a dozen miles away — a classic day trip by motorboat. Our dedicated guide covers the base in detail: boat rental in Fréjus.

Saint-Raphaël: two ports and the Corniche d'Or on the doorstep

Saint-Raphaël lines up the Vieux Port, right in the town centre facing the café terraces, and the large Santa Lucia marina to the east, one of the biggest in the Var. Leaving from Santa Lucia buys you time eastwards: the Lion de Mer and Lion de Terre — two red porphyry islets emblematic of the bay — are a few cables away, and Cap du Dramont with its Île d'Or appears after barely three miles. Beyond begin the coves of Agay and Anthéor, the heart of the Corniche d'Or. For an outing centred on the Estérel, it is the most direct option — our guide to the Estérel by boat from Saint-Raphaël covers this spectacular stretch anchorage by anchorage.

The same waters, two orientations

The real dividing line is simple: Fréjus looks west towards the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, Saint-Raphaël east towards the Estérel. In both cases the typical day is the same — a morning anchorage in a clear-water cove, a swim, lunch aboard, then a slow run home along the coast. In an established easterly, the Estérel coves turn uncomfortable and you fall back towards Saint-Aygulf; in a mistral, the opposite. Our guide to Mediterranean winds helps read the gulf's weather before picking a direction.

Anchorages: arrive early, anchor on sand

In summer, the coves from the Dramont to Anthéor rank among the busiest sectors of the Var coast. A study based on AIS tracks of leisure vessels quantified anchoring pressure on the French Mediterranean seabed and places the Riviera among the most heavily used areas in Europe, with clear peaks in July and August (Deter, Lozupone, Inacio, Boissery & Holon, Boat anchoring pressure on coastal seabed, Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2017, see the study on Google Scholar). In practice: arrive before 11am, aim for the pale sand patches and stay off the seagrass — our guide to anchoring near posidonia sums up the rules that apply along this whole shore.

Our advice

Programme for programme, pick the base closest to where you are staying: on this compact gulf, neither one shuts you out of any anchorage. For a first family RIB day, Port-Fréjus is unbeatably simple; to maximise time in the Estérel coves, Santa Lucia starts three miles ahead. If you are still hesitating at regional scale, our overview where to rent a boat on the French Riviera places both ports among all the Riviera bases.
