Arcachon bay is probably the Atlantic coast's most playful stretch of water for a licence-free boat: the Île aux Oiseaux and its cabanes tchanquées 2 miles from the harbour, the Arguin sandbank facing the Dune du Pilat, the Mimbeau spit on the Cap Ferret side. The passes out to the open ocean are strictly forbidden to hire boats — every operator hammers the point, and rightly so.
Everything here runs on the tide: hire companies set their slots around high water, because at low tide much of the bay empties and only the buoyed channels remain navigable. At the Arguin bank, anchor on the lagoon side and respect the nature-reserve marks, as part of the bank is closed to landing depending on the season.
