A tiny harbour, nine shelters within ten kilometres

Portofino Harbour sits 200 m from the piazzetta (OpenStreetMap records) and its berths are among the most contested in the Mediterranean. The rental fleet therefore spreads across the Gulf of Tigullio: Santa Margherita Ligure Marina at 3 km, Rapallo Carlo Riva Marina at 4.8 km and Rapallo Porto Publico at 4.9 km, then Camogli at 7.1 km on the far side of the headland, Recco at 8.2 km, Porto Turistico "Amm. Luigi Gatti" at 8.9 km, Chiavari at 9.1 km, Lavagna at 10.4 km and Bogliasco at 13.9 km — 49 marinas within 60 km in all. The promontory is a marine protected area, and its ecological state is documented: a study by Federico Betti and colleagues, published in 2020 in The European Zoological Journal, tracked two fan mussel (Pinna nobilis) populations inside the MPA before and after the Mediterranean-wide mass mortality event; mortality rates there reached 91.29% and 43.94%, and after the October 2018 storm and a further survey in June 2020, no specimen was found (see the study). September in Portofino: the fleet changes, not just the rate

This is the most spectacular case in this week’s readings: the median moves from €2,718 for August departures to €449 for September ones. A factor of six, which we refuse to present as an 83% discount: the logged ceiling falls in the same movement from €39,000 to €9,600, meaning that the very large units simply leave the catalogue after mid-September. What remains is a fleet of RIBs and sailboats at steady prices. The correct reading is therefore: in Portofino, September does not cut the price of a given boat, it makes accessible boats you never saw in August.
