A caldera you cannot anchor in, and an active volcano 7 km away

Santorini has the 177th marina density of our 183 bases: only two harbours within a 60 km radius — Vlychada marina 6.7 km away on the island's south side, then nothing before Ios at 40.3 km (OpenStreetMap data, ODbL). That is no accident: the caldera is a marine crater whose walls drop to depths that rule out an anchor, hence the buoys and skippered trips. The neighbourhood is geologically alive, too: a study by Andrea Luca Rizzo and colleagues, published in 2016 in Scientific Reports, measured gases from a hydrothermal system at 220 °C venting 500 metres below sea level, on the Kolumbo submarine volcano, 7 km north-east off Santorini, and concludes there is vigorous outgassing of mantle-derived volatiles with potential hazard (see the study).
