That density has a measured downside: a study by Halil İbrahim Gülşen-Rothmund, Şebnem Arslan, Bedri Kurtuluş and co-authors, published in 2023 in Marine Pollution Bulletin, assessed trace metal pollution in the coastal sediments of Fethiye-Göcek Bay from 69 sampling points; distribution maps for eleven elements show enrichment especially near Fethiye harbour, contamination described as considerable in arsenic, cobalt, chromium and nickel, and even the minimum nickel concentrations already 9-fold enriched relative to Earth crust values; among the anthropogenic sources identified are the fuel oils used near crowded harbours (see the study).
