A €3,500 floor that does not move between surveys

That is not a quirk of the day. One step down, the catamaran costs less than the motorboat

In the same 3 September survey: catamaran at a €1,380 median on 6 offers (€1,030 to €3,450), motorboat at €1,954 on 10 offers (€695 to €6,608) and sailboat at €579 on 8 offers (€232 to €1,390). Malta is therefore one of the rare bases in our collection where the catamaran is cheaper than the motorboat — by 29% here — and where sail remains, by a distance, the only affordable route. The all-category median comes out at €897 on 56 offers, from €197 to €8,000. Stepping down from the yacht divides the budget by 2.6 towards the catamaran, by 8.8 towards the sailboat. Five marinas in three kilometres, and a shelf mapped to the metre

The archipelago concentrates everything: Excelsior Marina at 1 km, Laguna Marina at 1.3 km, Manoel Island Yacht Marina at 1.5 km, Sa Maison at 1.7 km and Portomaso at 3.1 km, then Il-Menqa at 11.3 km and Mġarr Marina, on Gozo, at 24 km — seven harbours within 60 km (OpenStreetMap data, ODbL), simply because the archipelago stops there. What lies underneath is better known here than elsewhere: a study by Mariacristina Prampolini, Philippe Blondel, Federica Foglini and Fantina Madricardo, published in 2018 in Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, draws on multibeam echosounder surveys run from 2009 to 2012 off the north-west and east coasts of the Maltese archipelago, covering 1,408.3 km² at a maximum resolution of 1 m, at depths from 1.5 to 263 m; it produces the first full benthic habitat map of the continental shelf off Malta’s east and north-west coasts, with a detailed sediment classification — bedrock, rocky blocks, coarse sand and gravel, fine to medium sand and maerl, sand and gravel (see the study). For anchoring off the Blue Lagoon or Comino the consequence is direct: maerl is a living, fragile bottom — pick the pale sand you can see instead.
