Boat Rental in Albufeira: the Benagil Caves
Boat rental in Albufeira: the ochre cliffs of the Algarve, Benagil caves, the coves of São Rafael and Carvoeiro, which boat to choose, season and budget.
Seen from the sea, the Algarve coast is a maritime western: ochre cliffs carved by the Atlantic, arches, stacks and caves — the most famous of them, Benagil, drawing visitors from around the world. Albufeira, with its sheltered marina, is one of the best bases from which to explore it all at your own pace.
The cruising ground: cliffs, coves and caves
West of the marina, the coves begin immediately: São Rafael, Coelha and Galé, golden inlets cut into the cliff line. Keep heading west and the coast builds in intensity towards Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro: this is where the Benagil cave hides, with its domed roof pierced by an eye open to the sky, and a little further on the beach of Marinha, often ranked among the finest in Europe. Note that access inside the Benagil cave is regulated — you admire it from the entrance, which remains spectacular. East of Albufeira, the long beaches backed by the Falésia cliffs offer a quieter option.
A timing tip: aim for Benagil early in the morning, before the excursion flotillas arrive from all along the coast. You will enjoy the low light raking across the cliffs and open water to manoeuvre in front of the caves — and the run back to Albufeira will be with the wind and swell behind you.
Which boat to choose
To reach Benagil and Marinha, the RIB is the ideal tool: fast, stable in the Atlantic chop and able to approach the caves safely. A motorboat suits a swimming day between São Rafael and Galé. Licence-free boats are also on offer: Portuguese regulations differ from the French framework, and each listing states whether the boat is open to non-licence holders, with the owner's briefing included. When to go
The season runs from May to October, with Atlantic water that stays brisk but days that are almost always sunny. The golden rule here is swell: even in fine weather, leftover swell closes off the caves. Leave in the morning, when the sea is at its smoothest, and watch for the north-westerly breeze that often fills in during the afternoon. June and September offer the best balance of crowds and conditions.
Budget: the ranges we see
Expect 200–600 € per day for a RIB, 250–900 € per day for a motorboat, 100–250 € per day for a licence-free boat and 150–350 € per day for a skipper — a sensible choice here, as reading the swell close to the cliffs takes practice. For an identical boat, gaps between platforms reach 10–25 %, with service fees of 0 to 9 %: Boat-Comparator compares live offers in Albufeira and neighbouring Vilamoura, with no affiliation to any platform.
