BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
Boat Rental in Fort-de-France: The Bay and Diamond Rock
From Martinique's capital, the Baie des Flamands opens onto Trois-Îlets and the Anses d'Arlet, all the way to Diamond Rock — a more urban alternative to Le Marin.
By Clément Lacaille, editor of Boat-Comparator · updated
Unlike Le Marin, the large charter base geared toward the run down to the Grenadines, Fort-de-France offers a more urban starting point for exploring Martinique's south-west coast on a day trip.
Baie des Flamands
From the harbour, Fort-de-France's wide bay, watched over by Fort Saint-Louis at its entrance, opens directly onto Trois-Îlets across the water — birthplace of Empress Joséphine, under an hour's sail away.
Anses d'Arlet, the postcard stop
Further south, the Anses d'Arlet form a fishing village clustered around its waterfront church, with an easy sandy anchorage and sea turtles frequently spotted close to shore.
Diamond Rock
At the far end of the route, Diamond Rock, a steep volcanic islet off Le Diamant, still carries the memory of its occupation by the British navy in the early 19th century — a striking landmark best admired from the water rather than approached too closely, as the waters around it are known to be tricky.
Choosing a boat, when to sail
RIB €200–600 a day for a day trip to the Anses d'Arlet; catamaran by the week (€3,500–7,000) to combine this coast with a run down to Saint Lucia. Dry season runs December to April, with steady easterly trade winds.
