Boat Rental at the Mar Menor, La Manga

Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by a sandbar: what to know about renting a boat at La Manga.

On the coast of Murcia, Spain, the Mar Menor is a geographical curiosity: Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow, roughly 20-kilometre sandbar, La Manga.

Two seas, two moods

On the lagoon side, shallow water that's much warmer than the Mediterranean creates calm, almost swell-free conditions, ideal for a first family outing or a license-free boat. On the open side, on the other shore of La Manga, you'll find a more classic Mediterranean, with wind and some chop depending on the day.

A lagoon under environmental watch

In recent years the Mar Menor has suffered episodes of declining water quality, linked to surrounding agricultural runoff, which led Spanish authorities to strengthen its protection. Before booking, it's worth checking current water conditions for your travel dates, especially late in the summer.

Five small volcanic islands

In the middle of the lagoon, a string of small volcanic islands (including Isla del Barón and Isla Perdiguera) offer easy anchorages and quiet beaches, just minutes by boat from the marinas of La Manga.

The right boat for the lagoon

A license-free boat (€100-250/day) or a small RIB (€200-600/day) is more than enough on the lagoon side, where shallow water limits the appeal of a deep draft anyway. For an outing on the open Mediterranean side, a day cruiser is better suited.
