About twenty kilometres west of Palma, Santa Ponsa is a quieter base for exploring Mallorca's south-west coast, away from the bustle of the Balearic capital.
A large sheltered bay
Santa Ponsa's bay, wide open yet protected from the prevailing winds, offers an easy stretch of water for a first outing or a family cruise, with several sandy coves within easy reach of the marina.
Heading to Dragonera island
Further south, the Sa Dragonera nature reserve, an uninhabited protected islet off Mallorca's western tip, is reached in under an hour: a classic day-trip anchorage, prized for its clear water and marine reserve status.
Toward Peguera and Camp de Mar
Between Santa Ponsa and Andratx, the coast strings together small sheltered coves — Peguera and Camp de Mar with its footbridge-linked islet — easily explored on a day trip from the base.
Choosing a boat
A RIB (€200–600 a day) is plenty to cover this nearby coastline; a day-cruiser (€250–900 a day) adds comfort for a family outing. Heading to Dragonera, keep an eye on westerly wind, which can raise a short chop on this exposed stretch.
