Renting a boat in the Whitsundays, Australia

Whitehaven Beach, the Great Barrier Reef, a reversed season: what to know before renting a boat out of Airlie Beach.

On the other side of the world, the Whitsundays, off Airlie Beach in Queensland, form an archipelago of tropical islands at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef — a very different destination from Europe's cruising grounds.

A reversed season

The Southern Hemisphere flips the calendar: the austral winter, from June to August, is the dry season with stable sailing conditions, while the austral summer (December to February) is hotter and more humid. In other words, the best time to sail here is while Europe is deep in winter.

Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven beach, with its near-pure silica sand, and the Hill Inlet lookout above it, are the must-sees of any boat trip through the archipelago.

One thing to watch

Between October and May, jellyfish (stingers) often make a protective swimsuit necessary for swimming outside netted areas — worth checking with the rental operator depending on the time of year.

Planning your trip

The Australian market is still less covered by the major rental platforms than Europe: compare the offers available on the Airlie Beach listing page on Boat-Comparator before booking.
