The Furling Genoa: Unfurl, Reduce and Trim Without Jamming the Drum

The headsail of charter sailboats rolls in and out from the cockpit. Furling line, sheet cars, reducing in strong wind: the complete manual.

On nearly every charter sailboat, the headsail is a furling genoa: it rolls around the forestay like a blind, unfurls and reefs from the cockpit, with no trip to the foredeck. It is the piece of equipment that did most to simplify cruising — provided you know the three or four moves that keep it from jamming.

Understanding the system: one furling line against two sheets

The drum at the foot of the forestay is driven by the furling line — the rope led back to the cockpit whose pull rolls the sail away. Opposite it, the two genoa sheets pull the other way. The whole manoeuvre rests on that balance: you do not unfurl by letting everything go, you accompany it. A furling line released all at once whips inside the drum and forms riding turns — THE classic failure, which then prevents furling at the exact moment the wind pipes up.

Unfurling and furling cleanly

To unfurl: bear away slightly, haul the leeward sheet while a crew member holds the furling line, letting it run under control. To furl: the move is easier with the sail depowered — bear away until the genoa is blanketed behind the mainsail, or ease it by luffing gently — and always keep a little tension on the sheet while the line rolls the sail: that is what guarantees a tight, regular furl that will hold at anchor and downwind at night. Sail fully rolled, cleat the furling line: a genoa unrolling itself in a night squall at anchor is a great classic of bad nights.

Reducing under way: the furler’s real superpower

Between “all out” and “all rolled”, the furler allows every intermediate area: a few turns of the drum and the genoa becomes a working jib. Two adjustments go with the reduction: move the sheet car forward — otherwise the leech opens and the sail flogs — and accept that the reduced, fuller-cut sail points a little less well. What aerodynamics sees

The genoa is not just a “front engine”: it works as a pair with the mainsail, whose airflow it conditions. The pressure-measurement campaigns run in wind tunnels and under real sail by Viola and Flay, published in 2011 in Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, show how much the genoa’s leading edge hosts the suction peaks that drive the boat upwind — and how much its trim conditions the whole sail plan (see the study on Google Scholar). The practical translation: a well-trimmed genoa — neither flogging nor strangled against the spreaders — is worth all the engine’s horsepower in a good breeze, as our guide to windless days reminds us… by contrast.

At boat handover: three checks

At the briefing, have the genoa fully unfurled and furled once: in a single move you check the furling line’s condition, the drum’s smoothness and the UV strip that protects the rolled sail. Note the number of standing turns in the drum and the furling line’s lead.
