Jellyfish in the Mediterranean: spotting them, avoiding them, reacting

Pelagia noctiluca, first-aid reflexes, and why a boat remains the best way to explore the coast when jellyfish are around.

A translucent cloud in the turquoise water, and the planned swim is cut short: jellyfish are part of the Mediterranean scenery some summers, without this being a new or alarming phenomenon. Here's how to recognise them and keep a boat trip enjoyable despite their presence.

The most common jellyfish on our coasts

In the Mediterranean, the most commonly encountered species is Pelagia noctiluca, a pelagic jellyfish a few centimetres across, with a translucent bell tinted pink or purple, trailing long stinging tentacles. It normally lives offshore and drifts toward the coast depending on currents — its presence is cyclical and varies widely from one year, and one beach, to the next.

Why it sometimes drifts close to shore

Jellyfish don't swim against the current: it's wind and surface currents that push them toward beaches, particularly after several days of sustained wind or very calm seas. Heading out on the water often lets you get away from them, since swarms tend to stay localised to certain stretches rather than spreading evenly along the whole coast.

The right first-aid reflexes for a sting

A boat is a great way to keep enjoying the sea

Scan the water before jumping in, choose an anchorage away from a spotted swarm, or simply enjoy paddleboarding and swimming in open water rather than close to a crowded shore: renting a boat keeps its full value even on days when jellyfish show up on the beaches. Check the onboard flotation and snorkelling gear — see our paddle, snorkelling and water toys guide — and pick a sheltered anchorage, for example near Porquerolles, often clearer than an anchorage close to a busy shoreline.
