Les Sables-d'Olonne, Home of the Vendée Globe: Boat Rental on the Côte de Lumière
The Sables-d'Olonne channel, start and finish line of the Vendée Globe, and the long Remblai beach: this Vendée town blends offshore-racing heritage with family-friendly boating. What to know before you rent.
Les Sables-d'Olonne is more than a Côte de Lumière seaside resort: it's the home port of the Vendée Globe, the non-stop, single-handed round-the-world sailing race, whose channel has seen skippers depart and return every four years since 1989.
A channel governed by the tide
Unlike a Mediterranean harbour, entering Les Sables-d'Olonne depends directly on tide height: the strong Atlantic tidal range, which can exceed 5 metres on a high coefficient, dictates departure and return windows, especially for deeper-draught boats. This same principle of tidal propagation through a narrow channel, well documented in the landmark study by Speer and Aubrey published in 1985 in Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science (see the study on Google Scholar), explains why operators always hand over the day's tide times.
What you can reach by rental boat
Once past the channel, the coast offers long sandy beaches — the Remblai, the Grande Plage, Tanchet — and, further out, access to Île d'Yeu for the more capable boats, a crossing of roughly ninety minutes depending on the engine. Our guide to La Rochelle, Île de Ré and Les Sables-d'Olonne places the town in its regional context, and our guide on reaching Île d'Yeu details a neighbouring departure option from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie.
Vendée Globe heritage, visible from the water
The channel itself, with its grandstands and a harbour office geared toward the race, keeps a strong offshore-racing identity — a spirit local operators, often close to the competitive sailing world, embrace rather than downplay.
License-free and family-friendly
Inside the harbour and along the nearby coast, license-free boats are available for a relaxed look at the coastline, at the same price range as elsewhere in France (100 to 250 € a day).
