Naples or Salerno: where to start for the Amalfi Coast by boat?

Positano, Amalfi, Capri, the gulf islands: Naples or Salerno, which base to rent a boat and reach the Amalfi Coast without wasting time?

The Amalfi Coast is best enjoyed from the sea, far from the packed hairpins of the coast road. The question is where to start: Naples to the north-west, opening onto Capri and the gulf islands, or Salerno to the south-east, right at the doorstep of Amalfi and Positano. The right choice mostly depends on what you want to see.

Naples, the gulf and its islands before the coast

Starting from Naples means heading first for the gulf: Capri and its Faraglioni, Ischia and its thermal springs, little colourful Procida — an island programme detailed in our Naples, Ischia and Procida guide. The Amalfi Coast proper lies further on, beyond the Sorrento peninsula: reachable in a day in calm seas, but better tackled over several days. It is the base for lovers of islands and open water.

Salerno, the Amalfi Coast a bow-length away

At Salerno, you are right at the foot of the scenery: Amalfi, Ravello seen from the sea, Positano with its cascade of houses, Praiano, the Furore bay — all within a few miles, no gulf crossing. It is the most direct base to focus an outing on the Amalfi Coast itself, and the natural jumping-off point for the wild Cilento coast further south. Our dedicated Amalfi Coast and Capri guide describes these anchorages one by one.

Distances: the deciding criterion

It all comes down to geography. Positano and Amalfi sit right across from Salerno but a fair way from Naples; Capri is halfway, easier from Naples or Sorrento. If your priority is the Amalfi Coast, Salerno saves hours of sailing each day; if you dream first of Capri and the islands, Naples makes sense.

Budget and crowds

Naples offers a wider fleet and often gentler starting rates, but dense marine traffic and big-port formalities. Salerno, more modest, puts the main show minutes away. Our Amalfi Coast prices ranges help calibrate the budget by base and season, notoriously pricey from June to September.

Seabeds to respect

Below the surface, Posidonia meadows and shallow rocky beds structure the whole gulf. A 2015 study in Marine Pollution Bulletin by Campagne and co-authors put a figure on the economic value of the services these meadows provide — seabed protection, fish nursery, carbon storage — higher than that of an equivalent area of coral reef (see the study on Google Scholar) — one more reason to anchor on clear sand off Positano or Amalfi.

Which to choose

For the Amalfi Coast first and direct access, Salerno. For Capri, Ischia and the gulf islands before the coast, Naples. Torn between regions? Our Malta or Sicily comparison offers another gateway to the central Mediterranean.
