BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
No-licence boating on the Thau lagoon from Sete
The Thau lagoon by no-licence boat: sheltered water, Bouzigues, oyster beds and the wind that really matters. A practical guide starting from Sete.
The Thau lagoon is arguably one of the best places in France to start out with a no-licence boat: large sheltered waters, no ocean swell, and a backdrop of villages and oyster beds. Setting off from Sete, a 6 hp boat is perfectly at home here, with no tide or passes to stress over. Boat-Comparator helps you compare local offers, with no affiliation to any platform.
Sheltered water, ideal for beginners
French no-licence boating is capped at 6 hp (4.5 kW), by day, within a zone set by the operator. On Thau the inland sea runs about a dozen kilometres long, so your 2 to 5 mile radius from Sete already covers a good part of it. There are no dangerous passes or strong tides to manage — the lagoon meets the sea through narrow channels a no-licence boat need not use, which makes the outing far simpler.
Bouzigues and the oyster beds
Head for Bouzigues, the oyster village, cruising past the shellfish beds that define Thau. You can also aim for Meze and Marseillan at the far end of the lagoon for a full, tasty day out. Weave slowly between the oyster tables, which are marked but tightly packed, and keep your distance: the cables and posts are unforgiving. Anchoring is easy over the mud and sand bottom, in the lee of the shore. A stop at the quay in Bouzigues or Meze lets you taste the oysters straight from the producer, before an easy cruise back to Sete along the shore. Watch for cormorants perched on the posts and the low, colourful shellfish huts that give the lagoon its character.
Wind, the only real factor
With no tide or swell, it is the wind that rules on Thau. The tramontane, from the north-west, can raise a short, choppy sea along the whole length of the lagoon and strengthen markedly in the afternoon. Leave in the morning, watch the forecast, and return before it freshens. In an established tramontane, stay near the sheltered northern shore and shorten your plans. Most operators cap the zone to the lagoon itself, which makes the outing very relaxed.
