Renting a boat in Noirmoutier: the Passage du Gois, salt marshes and the Bois de la Chaise
An island linked to the mainland by a bridge and, at low tide, by a submersible causeway; salt marshes, oyster beds, the pine woods of the Bois de la Chaise: what to know before renting a boat in Noirmoutier.
Noirmoutier-en-l'Île is only half a "real" island: linked to the Vendée mainland by a bridge since 1971, it is also, at low tide, linked by the Passage du Gois — a submersible road that disappears under the sea twice a day. That dual identity, between land and water, makes it a distinctive stop for a boat trip.
The Passage du Gois, seen from the water
About 4.5 km long, this paved causeway links Noirmoutier to the mainland at Beauvoir-sur-Mer and vanishes under several metres of water at every high tide — stragglers who linger too long are regularly rescued from the refuge towers dotted along the route. Seen from a boat as the sea reclaims it, the sight is striking: check the tide tables before planning a trip nearby.
Salt marshes and oysters, the island's other face
The whole eastern shore of Noirmoutier, around L'Épine, is covered in salt marshes still worked today, where salt and fleur de sel are harvested by hand in summer. On the north coast, around L'Herbaudière, oyster beds line the channel — oyster farming remains a living activity on the island, best watched rather than disturbed.
The Bois de la Chaise, anchoring in the shade of the pines
On the north-eastern tip, the Bois de la Chaise shelters its beaches (Anse Rouge, Anse Verte) under a pine wood dotted with 19th-century seaside villas — one of the most sheltered and sought-after anchorages on the island in summer.
Why this kind of slow cruising does you good
Cruising slowly along a sheltered stretch of water like this one isn't just about the scenery: a landmark study in environmental psychology, published by White and co-authors in 2010, found that the mere presence of a "blue space" — a calm body of water in view — improves people's felt sense of mental restoration compared with an equivalent land-based scene (see the study on Google Scholar). All the more reason to enjoy a day spent between marshes and pines.
