Renting a Boat in Albania: Saranda, Ksamil, Vlorë, the Alternative Next Door to Greece
The Albanian Riviera, Ksamil's islets, the Corfu channel right next door: what to know before considering a boat rental on the Albanian coast.
Less than twenty kilometres from Corfu, across the channel of the same name, the Albanian Riviera has become, in just a few years, one of the Mediterranean's rising coastlines: turquoise water at Ksamil, tucked-away coves between Saranda and Himarë, the broad bay of Vlorë further north. In 2023, Albania recorded the world's largest increase in international tourist arrivals compared with 2019, according to a study published in 2025 in the journal Land on the development of this "3S" destination — sun, sea, sand (see the study on Google Scholar).
A coastline still young for chartering
Unlike neighbouring Greece or Croatia, Albania does not yet have a structured network of rental bases like the ones Boat-Comparator tracks elsewhere in the Mediterranean: the platforms we follow today do not carry a stable listing there. That does not mean sailing there is impossible — local owners and skippers are developing fast around Saranda and Ksamil — but booking is still largely arranged directly rather than through an online comparator.
The simplest option today: start from Corfu
To explore the Albanian coast without giving up a mature rental market, the most practical option remains renting a boat in Corfu and crossing the channel — about thirty minutes' motoring gets you into Albanian waters from the south of the island. Our guide to the Ionian Islands for beginners covers the paperwork and skill level needed for that kind of crossing. One point of caution: Albania belongs to neither the European Union nor the Schengen area, so check customs and exit-zone formalities before crossing the maritime border with your rented boat.
What is worth the trip
- Ksamil and its four islets, often compared to the Caribbean for the colour of the water;
- The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), an intensely blue karst spring, reachable on a land excursion from Saranda;
- Vlorë bay, larger and less crowded, at the junction between the Adriatic and the Ionian.
Our recommendation
While a structured rental market has yet to take hold there, the best approach remains booking a boat in Corfu on Boat-Comparator and adding a "channel crossing" day to Albania to the itinerary — rather than looking for a local owner on the spot with no point of comparison.
