Sailing Solo on a Rental Boat: What to Know
No ban, but a few specific precautions: what changes when you rent and sail alone, without crew.
By Clément Lacaille, editor of Boat-Comparator · updated
Renting a boat to sail alone, without crew, is entirely possible: no rule bans solo sailing on a rental boat. A few precautions specific to single-handed sailing are still worth knowing.
The same obligations as with crew
Mandatory safety equipment, VHF radio watch and the 300-metre, 5-knot band apply in exactly the same way, whether you're alone or with crew.
Handling manoeuvres without help
Without crew to take the helm or hold a line, every manoeuvre — casting off, anchoring, docking — needs more forward planning: prepare lines and anchor in advance, and ease sail or slow down before starting the manoeuvre rather than during it.
Autopilot, a valuable ally
On a sailboat or an equipped motorboat, an autopilot frees your hands to trim a sail or check the chart without holding the helm continuously — worth checking for before booking a solo outing.
Managing fatigue
With no one to take over the helm or stand a watch, fatigue builds up faster solo: it's worth planning shorter legs, taking regular breaks at anchor, and skipping night sailing until you have solo experience under your belt.
Checking in and staying reachable
With no one else aboard to raise the alarm if something goes wrong, it's worth telling someone ashore your route plan before setting off, on top of the usual departure checklist.
Budget and comparison
Rates stay the same as a standard rental — license-free €100-250 a day, RIB €200-600, sailboat €300-700. Some operators simply ask for proven experience before handing over larger boats to a solo skipper.
