A 1-to-55 ratio between the first and the last sailboat of the same survey

Survey of 6 September 2026 for a 6 October departure: 40 sailboats, a €1,260 daily median, from €116 to €6,400. Across the 181 bases where our surveys yield a usable sailboat median, Barcelona has the 4th deepest catalogue, the 32nd lowest entry price… and yet the 23rd highest median. That combination marks a market split in two: a ratio of 1 to 55 separates the €116 opening offer from the €6,400 top one, on the same day and the same water. On one side a berth sold on a shared trip, on the other a cruising monohull chartered whole with crew — two products with nothing in common that a platform files under the same label. In Barcelona the sailboat costs nearly twice the motorboat

In the same 6 September survey: motorboat at a €697 median on 11 offers (€58 to €1,446), RIB at €350 on 3 offers only, catamaran at €5,290 on 12 offers (€581 to €8,580) and yacht at €3,400 on 13 offers. The sailboat therefore comes out at 1.8 times the motorboat — a rare inversion in our collection, where sail is almost always the cheaper option. The explanation is local and consistent: Barcelona is a racing city, its monohull fleet charters crewed by the day, not bareboat on the cheap. Boarding on foot, and what the coastline does to litter

Barcelona’s oddity is that you board from the city itself (OpenStreetMap data, ODbL): Moll del Dipòsit at 1.2 km, Port Olímpic at 2.3 km, Moll de Llevant at 2.4 km and Marina Vela at 2.5 km; after that the coast empties fast — Port Fòrum Sant Adrià (5.5 km), Port de Badalona (7.9 km), Masnou (15.4 km) and Premià (19.9 km), for 19 harbours within 60 km listed on the marina hub around Barcelona. On this exact stretch, a study by Ivan Hernández, Leidy M. Castro-Rosero, Manuel Espino and José M. Alsina, published in 2025 in Frontiers in Marine Science, modelled by Lagrangian simulation the dispersion and beaching of floating debris in the Barcelona coastal region: areas close to release points receive the most particles, significant wave height only mildly affects beaching (Pearson’s r = 0.36), coastline orientation drives accumulation, and above all the mass contribution of river discharge is only 6.0% of the debris collected on beaches where cleanup data was available (see the study). What you meet offshore, in other words, does not mostly come from the rivers. On the rules, Spain requires no qualification up to 15 hp (11 kW) on a hull of 5 m maximum, 6 m under sail, in daylight and within 2 nautical miles of shelter — but for a cruising monohull the operator will ask for demonstrable experience or a skipper.
