The catamaran cheaper than the sailboat: Dubrovnik’s anomaly

Survey of 6 September 2026 for a 6 October departure: 21 sailboats, a €612 daily median, from €191 to €1,701 — the 23rd deepest sailboat catalogue of our 181 bases. In the same survey, on the same date and for the same departure, the catamaran comes out at a €292 median on 10 offers, €282 to €2,500: less than half the sailboat, on a catalogue barely half the size. That is the reverse of what we see almost everywhere else, where the second hull is paid for. The explanation is again composition: the catamaran catalogue recorded that day in Dubrovnik is made of day trips sold by the seat, while the sailboat is chartered whole. Still on 6 September: motorboat at €964 on 18 offers (€314 to €2,780), yacht at €2,856 on 27 offers (€680 to €10,000), RIB on a single listing (€407) and license-free on two (€158 and €179) — the day’s 85 offers spanning €113 to €10,000 for a €940 median. One practical detail matters more than the median: charter sailboats do not leave from the old port. ACI Marina Dubrovnik (3.4 km, 380 berths) sits up the Ombla estuary at Komolac, and that is where the Saturday-to-Saturday fleets turn over; Marina Frapa Dubrovnik is at 1.3 km (220 berths), YC Orsan at 1.6 km, Marina Orašac at 7.9 km, ACI "Veljko Barbieri" in Slano at 22.3 km (193 berths) and Marina Rogač at 23 km — only seven harbours within 60 km (OpenStreetMap data, ODbL), listed on the marina hub around Dubrovnik. €376 in August, €604 in September: composition, not price lists

By departure month the sailboat gives €376 for August 2026 (4 surveys, €143 to €1,715), €604 for September (5 surveys, €188 to €1,840) and €612 for October (1 survey, €191 to €1,701). That apparent 61% rise is not a rate rise — an operator does not change its price list between two of our passes. The floor proves it: it climbs from €143 to €191 while the ceiling barely moves; it is the small units that leave the catalogue, not the rates that climb. On context, Dubrovnik’s visitor pressure is an old research subject: a projection published in 2013 by Ivana Pavlić in Tourism and Hospitality Management, built on a seasonal ARIMA model, started from the observation that the city was "facing the problem of concentration of a large number of ships and passengers in a short period of time" and estimated 1,294,316 cruise passengers expected in the Dubrovnik area in 2015, a 31% increase on 2011 at an average growth rate of 7.06% per year (see the study) — this is a 2013 forecast, not an observation, and we cite it as such.
