How much chain to let out: the right anchor scope to hold well

3:1, 5:1, 7:1 scope, water depth at high tide, seabed type: how much chain or rode do you really need on a rental boat to hold without dragging?

“How much chain do I let out?” It is the question that decides, more than any other, whether your anchor holds or drags in the night. The answer comes down to one word — scope — and a few simple reflexes, valid on any rental boat.

What scope is

Anchor scope is the length of chain (or rode) let out relative to the water depth. A 5:1 scope means five metres of chain for one metre of depth. The larger this ratio, the more horizontal the pull on the anchor — and it is precisely that horizontal, not vertical, effort that drives the anchor into the seabed and holds it. Too short, and you pull the anchor upward and break it out.

The benchmarks that work

In practice, remember three benchmarks: 3:1 as an absolute minimum, in flat calm and for a short, watched stop; 5:1 as a comfortable daytime standard; 7:1 as soon as the wind picks up or for an overnight. With rode (rope) rather than all-chain, lengthen further: lighter rope pulls at a less favourable angle. Many rental boats have chain marked every ten metres by colour: ask about the markings at the departure briefing.

The tide trap

Always work out scope on the water depth at high tide, not at the moment you drop the hook. On the Atlantic or in the Channel, where the range easily exceeds several metres, a perfect anchorage at low water becomes dangerously short six hours later — see our Atlantic tides guide. The seabed changes everything

Clear sand holds well; soft mud and especially weed or rock hold poorly — and in the Mediterranean you never anchor on Posidonia anyway, as our dedicated guide reminds you. What the science of holding says

Soil mechanics confirm the sailor’s intuition: an anchor’s holding capacity depends closely on embedment depth and the pull angle at the seabed. An analysis in the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering on the mechanics of drag embedment anchors in a soft seabed modelled how that capacity drops as the pull angle steepens — in other words, as scope decreases (see the study on Google Scholar). The sailor’s rule — “let out more chain” — has a measurable basis.
