Propriano is the ideal base for exploring the Valinco gulf, one of Corsica's most generous cruising grounds: huge beaches, granite coves, an emblematic Genoese tower — all within reach of a single day on the water, with no long passages required.
The cruising ground: two shores, two moods
The north shore lines up the gentle stops: Porto-Pollo and its quiet anchorage, then, past the point, the bay of Cupabia with its wild beach backed by maquis — one of the finest swimming stops in the region. The south shore is more mineral: the long beach of Portigliolo by the mouth of the Rizzanese river, then Campomoro with its village, Genoese tower and clear water made for snorkelling. Beyond Campomoro point begins a wild, exposed coast, best kept for calm days and seaworthy boats.
Between swims, look up: the hills of the Sartenais drop straight into the sea, and the hinterland holds some famous landmarks — Filitosa and its menhir statues a few kilometres from Porto-Pollo, Sartène perched above its valley. On the practical side, the inner gulf around Propriano offers sandy anchorages with good holding, and the harbour gives protection in almost any weather: a reassuring base for a first boat rental in Corsica, whatever your level of experience on board.
Which boat to choose
The RIB is the Swiss army knife of the Valinco: quick from shore to shore and easy to beach near the sand. A motorboat offers more comfort for a family day between Cupabia and Campomoro. Around Propriano itself, a licence-free boat already opens up fine swimming spots within the zone defined by the rental company. When to go
From May to October, with a peak in July and August when the road-accessible beaches fill up — which is precisely when a boat makes most sense, reaching Cupabia in peace. The thermal breeze fills in almost every summer afternoon: head for the south shore in the morning and ride the wind home. In a strong libeccio, the gulf entrance gets rough; stay in the well-protected inner Valinco instead. June and September combine warm water, quiet beaches and gentler rental rates — the sweet spot of the season for most crews.
