Renting a Boat in Syros, the Cyclades' Overlooked Capital

Ermoupoli's neoclassical architecture and a central spot between Mykonos, Tinos and Paros: discover Syros by rental boat.

Between Mykonos and Paros, Syros stays largely off the crowds' radar — even though it has been the administrative capital of the whole Cyclades since the 19th century.

Ermoupoli, an island capital

Ermoupoli, the prefecture's seat, is lined with neoclassical facades dating from its 19th-century heyday as a trading port — a very different look from the white cubic houses found on the rest of the archipelago. Above the harbour, the older quarter of Ano Syros, with its Catholic and Venetian heritage, climbs narrow lanes up to its cathedral.

A central spot for a Cyclades tour

Syros sits a short sail from Mykonos, Tinos, Paros and Naxos, making it a handy stopover or starting point for a one-week Cyclades itinerary, without Mykonos's prices or crowds.

A convenient ferry hub

Ermoupoli is also one of the main ferry hubs of the Cyclades, with regular links to most of the archipelago's islands — useful if part of your group would rather join the rental boat by scheduled ferry than by plane.

Two moods on the same island

The east coast, around Ermoupoli, holds the busier anchorages and rocky coves; the wilder west coast, more sheltered from the meltemi, offers quieter beaches for a calmer stop.

Budget and comparison

Sailboat €300-700 a day, catamaran €800-1,500 — the same ranges as the rest of the Cyclades, usually with less pressure on availability than Mykonos or Santorini at the height of summer. Boat-Comparator compares Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor for Syros in one search.
